The Chartered Institute of Journalists (CIoJ) has been representing the best interests of its members since 1884. We are an independent organisation that promotes standards and ethics throughout the profession. There are many benefits to membership that look after you and your family, too.

The CIoJ is the oldest professional body for Journalists in the world. It was founded – as the National Association of Journalists – in 1884 and six years later was granted its Royal Charter by Queen Victoria, to protect and serve those employed in the field of journalism.

The Institute combines the role of professional society with that of a trade union – known as the IoJ(TU). The Institute’s union section protects its members’ interests in the workplace and campaigns for better conditions for working journalists.

The Institute’s professional side is concerned with the standards and ethics of the media, the protection of journalistic freedom, training and administers the Institute’s many charities.

We have members in more than 30 countries who joined to be members of the senior professional organisation of journalists and who support the Institute’s principles of honest reporting, independence and being apolitical.
